Living With Technology

Monday, May 7th, 2007

I have been surrounded by technology (by choice) my whole life,  and I really got a kick out of something that happened this year for my birthday.  I found it interested that I only got ONE call from anyone I know to wish me happy birthday a few days ago (It was by my mom, the least technical person I know).  Do I not have any friends?  Did everyone forget about me?  No, I received probably 10 greetings via Twitter, 5 text messages, 8 instant messages and about 10 emails wishing me happy birthday!  It was pretty amazing in my opinion!   It tells me that people are thinking about me, and they are thinking about how I like to interact.  I mean, lets not waste time and chit chat about nothing, lets let him know we are thinking about him, and just wish him happy birthday the way he (me) likes it, and be done with it!  OH, and I got a couple greetings via my My Space page too.  This was a perfect birthday.  Now I love talking with people (don’t get me wrong) but when you are in your 30’s you really don’t care about birthdays as much as you did when you were say 4 or 5!  Ahh, technology!

End of Week Re-cap

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Been way to busy this week for a lot of blogging!  I am very sorry about that.  I will be getting back to posting more often soon, there is just a lot going on right now!  I have to admit I have been updating some cool things on my Twitter account more often then I have been blogging this week!

  • Bought several domains, got them all set up and indexed in a day, oh yea … and ranking.
  • Read more great stuff (funny and informative) on buying links.
  • Preparing for Link Building webinar
  • Suggested Matt Cutts go to Jackson, Wy
  • Closed on a house finally after a loan from hell finally went through.
  • Temp. in Utah went from 88 to 44 overnight.  Snow in May?? (another reason why I am leaving)
  • Client work.  I am working with some amazing people.  I love working online!

Well, that pretty much sums up my week.  It has been a busy one, but a most productive one.  I am working on some pretty cool posts about Google News (can’t believe more have not been talking about whats been going on) and more information on link buying/building and baiting.

Dish Network - The Biggest Group of Cell Phone Spammers

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

I did not want to have to write this post because I thought Dish Network would gain some common sense if I gave them some time. They have not, and I am more annoyed at these spammers then any email lottery notification spammer. I will NEVER use Dish Network again, and I hope some reading this post will join me.

Part of what I do for a living is help people with Reputation Management problems, but in cases like this, the company deserves to get the “bad press” word out. (more…)

Become an Expert at Something, Then Duplicate It

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Most of the people I talk to on a daily basis are not seasoned business owners.  Most of them are brand new to the internet, search and business in general.  Often times it can be frustrating when trying to help some of these people see the vision of what this business can grow into.  I have some simple advice that should help those on the fence with this. Go Daddy - Go Away!

Monday, February 5th, 2007

I know everyone watched the super bowl right? If you did then you probably saw the Go Daddy commercial. I know they have been on a marketing “sex” kick lately, but its old, overdone and borring and my message is simple - “go away”.

Your marketing is no longer making me want to buy a domain name from you, infact it’s making me want to stay away. The commercial was predictable. I had not seen it before it aired, but as I was watching it I knew exactly what was going to happen. Way to predicatable Go Daddy!

I would love to hear from anyone else who thinks the same as me.

Lame attack on breastfeeding mom

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

I have to add my two cents on this and how insainly stupid this useless attack by Jennifer Daniel Collins an Attorney at Faegre & Benson (they represent the National Pork Council) on the lactivist blogger is. Yes, I am posting because Shoemoney asked, but even more so for all the nursing mothers out there. I have three kids, and every single one of them was breastfed by my wife, and I know the challenges that she faced in doing what is BEST for my kids. Being attacked because you are promoting what is best for an infant is just flat out wrong. More should join on this quest to get the word out about this ridiculas law suit. (more…)

Two months later….

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Ok, I know its been about two month since I attended PubCon Las Vegas, and almost a year since Search Engine Strategies NYC 06, but I wanted to share some pic’s of some of the coolest swag. I always see “Shoe” boasting his swag, so I wanted to share a cool piece of clothing I picked up thanks to botw.org (thanks again guys - YOU ROCK!) (more…)

What kind of an example are you?

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Ok, I hope you will find this one as funny as I have. I have a 4 year old, and I learned just how much of a sponge the little guy is. I am always talking about “making money”, “saving money”, “investing”, “become and entrepreneur”. I really didn’t think the little guy was getting it until we took a trip down to visit grandma and grandpa, uncle and aunt and all the other cousins. (more…)

An interesting back up plan

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

So over the long holiday I basically got screwed by a hosting company I use for some smaller sites that I do some SEO work for.  The first mistake I made was staying with this company after the got hacked.  None of my sites were on this host, but some smaller ones that don’t (and will never) receive a ton of traffic were.

I was under no obligation (other then being an ethical person with a heart) to help them get their sites back up (plus the fact that all of my SEO work would be down the drain if I did not fix it ASAP).  That was the main problem though.  Getting the sites back up, because there was no “back up” of the sites anywhere and the host was flat out not helping and not returning calls and just being an ass.

One of my clients was really freaked out because she was not sure how she was going to ever be able to come up with all of the great content again for her site.  I was thinking and thinking about what could be done and if I had ever saved anything etc.  I had not.  Then it hit me.  THE WAY BACK MACHINE from Archive.org

The way back machine is a pretty cool (and powerful) website that archives most of the websites out there and they do it from the “birth” (or close to it) of the site.  It is pretty up to date as well, because when I went to look up the site in question it was completely archived and only two months old.  The good news and the point of this blog is the main thing this client of mine needed was her content.  All of her content was there on Archive.org and we were saved.   It took alot of work creating a new site, navigation etc.. but in as little as a night and a morning her entire site was back up and live.  I am pretty sure it was quick enough to not get dinged to bad by the engines either.

I will have to do some 301’s and some tweaking here and there, but a major disaster was avoided because of Archive.org

I used it for saving the life of a website, but its pretty cool to just go and see what websites used to look like and play around.  Don’t waste to much time like I have though.

Has anyone ever used Archive.org for the same reasons I have, or have you used it only for amusement? Also let this post be a good lesson for anyone that owns a website to back the entire thing up, and back it up often!
