My Top 10 New Years “SEO-ish” Resolution for 2007

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

As I have thought of everything accomplished personally and professionally over the course of 06′ it got me thinking of what I wanted to stop thinking about (and wasting brain cells on) in 07′ Please feel free to add to the list. This is just my personal list of things that have to get out of my brain “SEO wise” in 2007:

  1. I will take off the page rank option on my Google toolbar. It is to tempting to look at, and I do it way to much for something that matters so little. I got better things to dive deeper into that will actually help (like analytics).
  2. I will stop wasting my time with writing titles I think Google will like, and focus more on what my readers will like. (I don’t want to hear any crap about this)
  3. I will not waste time leaving comments (or thinking about leaving comments) on Matt Cutts Blog when its his cat writing the message!
  4. I will not tell my wife this little “SEO job” that I am working on “really quick” will only take 5 minutes. I will just be more blunt, and tell her she is better off heading to bed!
  5. I will stop thinking about how grocery stores can better “optimize” shelf space, and just walk away from now on without saying or thinking a word!
  6. I will stop trying to explain to my family members what an “SEO” really is, and just understand they will never get it no matter how hard I try!
  7. I will not be addicted to del.icio.us as much as I currently am!
  8. I will try to stop lying on #7 of my top 10 lists.
  9. I will listen to Eric Ward even more then I already do.
  10. I will stop writing top 10 lists just so people will link back to it! (whoops!)
  11. BONUS - I will help those struggling to get rid of rip off report, get rid of them once and for all!

In all seriousness I really would like to help even more in 07 through this blog, so feel free to ask any questions you ever have that are related to SEO, SEM, SMM, PPC or internet business in general. Other then those topics I will probably bore you if you ask me something else!

Small town business can equil big city business when it comes to the internet

Friday, December 29th, 2006

As I have been on vacation thinking about a lot of the small business owners (from small towns) that are clients of mine, it got me thinking about something. And since this is my blog I can post about it - right?

I have some pretty cool clients from small towns that are doing big business and making big business money. For them its ideal online - they get the opportunity of big business with the small town lifestyle they are looking for. This is the main reason I love doing business online - you can do it from anywhere! You are not tied down to a big office building in the middle of downtown that you have to fight hours of other commuters in the rat race.

If people could just get the vision and see the possibilities online they would be changed forever. I was thinking about an Aunt of mine (by marriage) that has a local business that is pretty dang successful selling goat soap and other various lotions. She is afraid to take the jump online and see what can happen because of fear of losing current income stream. i personally think going online could only explode it more for her and take her out of her 9-5. The only problem she may have if she went this route is not being able to keep up with the demand. (My guess is its a problem she would be willing to tackle if it took her out of her 9-5 comfort zone)

I have a really good buddy that lives in a ski resort area of Pinetop Arizona that goes and does what he pleases anytime, and most of the time when I am talking to him he has no idea what day of the week it is! He lives this “successful entrepreneurial” lifestyle by teaching other people about his home based business opportunity (again its online and can be done anywhere)! I have done business deals with this guy while he has been in Cabo, Hawaii and other places I have no idea!

The point here is the power of business online and what it can do for your lifestyle. You just have to believe you can make it happen and go make it happen!

Adium

Monday, December 18th, 2006

As most of my readers know I recently switched to MAC. I have been using PC’s for the last 15 years and finally made the switch. I still am not looking back and actually love using computers again.

I wanted to share a pretty cool MAC messenger program I found called Adium.

adium logo

If you are a MAC user and still need to use MSN because of all your contacts, or if you are like me and use Yahoo, MSN and ICQ then you love this program. It combines them all! I know this is not the first program like this out there, but this is the absolute best one that I have ever used and found.

A few things I like about Adium:

  • Separated your chats (msn, yahoo etc. you know who is chatting with you much easier)
  • Themes - its open source so again - developers make this program amazing
  • Extras - there are cool things that the program can do because of … again open source and developers
  • Sleek looking
  • Easy to use and set up accounts
  • If you have been using MSN (like I have for the last (almost) 10 years!) and want to keep using it, but you own a MAC, then you will want to download this program.

I love it and can’t say enough about it. I would love to know of other chat programs that MAC users love and why they would not use Adium?

What not to do in order to run a successful internet business!

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

I just thought this picture was amazing! It made me laugh so hard. This is a client of mine who sent me this picture because everytime I am on the phone with them I hear dogs barking in the background. One day I asked them about it, and they sent me this picture. I guess I really didn’t know the half of it!

It made me laugh because the first thing that comes to mind is - If you want to run a successful internet business the first thing you need is an uncluttered office and a dog-less desk!

Enjoy -

Why I love MAC - (part 2)

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Ok, so by now you have probably read my post as to why I will never buy a PC again. But if you have not, I purchased a MacBook 4 days ago and it was the best (computer purchasing) decision of my life!

The reason for a follow up post, is there is a funny-ironic twist to this experience. Almost two days into my MacBook experience my display crashed hard. I took it to several Apple techs and nobody had ever seen the problem - ever. They repeated that alot. They were stunned! I thought how funny, I purchased a MAC because I was tired of dealing with computers crashing and what did this MAC do? Crashed! Besides the wonderful experience I had with my new MacBook thus far I was wondering if I had made a good choice or not?

After what happened last night I know I did. With no questions asked just realizing that I may have got the one bad MAC out of a million the Apple store gave me a new MacBook. This new one is amazing. I can’t believe how fast it is, sleek, easy to use and everything else! I already created a DVD, and I have been trying to do that on my PC for the last two years with no success! (the commercials really aren’t BS-ing you!)

I give an 11 out of a possible 10 to the MAC customer service and they will have a MAC lover/user out of me for life. I can’t say that I have ever had the same experience with say…Dell, or Sony (both of which I have personal computers or laptops with).

Top 10 reasons I have been in the dark ages as a PC user

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

This weekend I finally purchased a MACBook as my new (and primary) laptop, and it has only been two days of using it, but its been the best computer purchasing decision of my life and here’s why:

  1. It just plain works, and is very simple to understand and use. I have never even touched a MAC in 15 years of using a PC, and I just started it up and everything worked. (which leads me to reason #2)
  2. It works right out of the box.
  3. No need for annoying “updates” or “service packs”.
  4. No need to delete all the files I won’t be using-ever! (that saves me hours alone).
  5. Everything I wanted to figure out how to do I was able to, for example getting a bluetooth wireless mouse to work. Finding software for programs I use often, such as FTP and starting to understand the file structure of the MAC. Again, super easy!
  6. I didn’t have to waste time with annoying anti-virus software.
  7. I don’t have to waste time with Internet Explorer anything.
  8. Firefox works amazing.
  9. Everything is clean and not cluttered.
  10. Amazing interface, graphics, look, style … I mean words can’t describe how absolutly sleek this machine is! I love it!

I was trying to decide if I was going to run the dual operating systems (OS X, and XP) and I just figured why give myself the headache. Every piece of software and program I use comes in a MAC version so no reason to have both. Just want to use something that will not keep giving me headaches and crashing! I think I have finally found it in this MACBook.
I will never go back to PC again, and it will bug me to no end until I get all of the computers in my life switched over to MAC. I have have eye on a pretty sick MAC Desktop with a 37inch screen. Maybe I will get that for my birthday coming up! (I would say hint hint, but I really don’t think my wife has ever read this blog once!)

I have not figured out everything with a MAC yet I am sure, but when I come across a problem, or something that I am not sure of, the thing I love the best is how simple MAC’s are so its been so easy to solve thus far! I am just really mad at myself for not making the switch sooner. If any of you are walking the line between PC and MAC and are really wondering if you should make the switch, let me be the first to tell you - DO IT and don’t look back!

Who do you read, and why?

Monday, December 4th, 2006

I was thinking about something today and it got me wondering something.  I have a great list of blogs that I read, and I will include my top 10 list of blogs I read related to marketing here in a few.  I don’t care if your reads do not include marketing topics, I am just curious some of the top blogs out there that my readers stay on top of.  Also, I would love to know how you stay on top of them?  Do you use a plug in for Firefox to automatically update you when a post is made?  Or do you just go back as often as you can?

Here are my top 10 reads (in order)

  1. SEO Book by Aaron Wall
  2. Eric Ward
  3. Matt Cutts
  4. Shoemoney
  5. GrayWolf’s SEO Blog
  6. SEOMoz Blog
  7. Seth Godin
  8. Jim Westergren
  9. Brad Fallon
  10. Unofficial SEO Blog

There are so many other reads I have, and I have left off some of the best SEO forums I read everyday.  These are just a list of the top 10 SEO/marketing related blogs that I read.  I use a plugin called SAGE for firefox and it makes reading all of the new posts from my top blogs easy, and all in one place!

Again, I would love to hear what everyone else reads?  It does not have to be SEO or marketing related, just whatever good reads you enjoy everyday and would love to share with us all.

PUBCON 2006 coming up = Very little time to post.

Friday, November 10th, 2006

As PubCon 2006 in Vegas approaches, I have less time to post and the postings will be light until about Tuesday, then look out! Here are my top 10 reasons I am excited for Pubcon 2006 (not in any specific order)

  1. Vegas Baby!
  2. Eric Ward
  3. Aaron Wall
  4. Shoemoney
  5. Matt Cutts
  6. Randfish
  7. Danny Sullivan
  8. The pictures I will be taking
  9. Getting away from the Cold Salt Lake City area!
  10. Buffets

I also am glad its Pubcon and not SES, which I think is going to be so much better! I have never gone to a Pubcon before, but I have attended an SES in the past, and as stated in the past the only thing worth it was Eric Ward.
