Picture Resize Tool

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

I want to share with all my readers a picture resizing tool I was told about today - http://www.picresize.com

picture resize tool

There are several different reasons ecommerce (product selling) sites need pictures resized. Most of the time when they get a catalog CD from their supplier the images that come are extremely huge and can’t be worked with on a website until they are resized. Plus for optimization purposes - as hard as it is to believe some people are still using dial-up connections and will never be able to wait for a huge image on your site to load.

If your site takes longer then 8 seconds to fully load most people will click off and go view the next. So make sure and take the proper steps to make sure all your images are universal in size and load quickly. I know it seems like a simple and easy step, but it can mean the difference of making a sale and not making a sale!

I would love to hear from everyone out there what picture resizing programs you use, and what you would recommend? Also what you use picture resizing programs for?

Shopping Cart Solution for bloggers

Right Cart Shopping Cart

This shopping cart can be added to any website so I wanted to share this cool cart with all my fellow bloggers that have looked far and wide for a good cart solution that works easy.  I use wordpress software and this cart works well.   Right Cart fee is 1% per transaction and that is it (much lower then paypal).  So check it out!  It’s all run with Ruby on Rails.  Watch the videos on their site and you will be amazed.  I’m still looking into it more but it seems a very promising solution for bloggers that sell products, and don’t want to spend a ton on a programer to integrate a cart solution into thier blog.

Drupal can be a powerful site platform with the right designer

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

The title says it all. I wanted to share a friends site that was designed completly using the Drupal software. Obviously manipulated with CSS, PHP and all other kinds of skills my designer has, but this is amazing!

Check it out - Business Know How

create financial wealth

The site is about helping people start a Legitimate Home Based Business and should do pretty well for him. I am filing this under website design because it is truly one of the coolest designs I have seen using the wordpress software.

Just remember the entire site was created from the basic wordpress install, and that is what makes this site so amazing! Kudos to my designer Mr. Brandon Buttars.

Top 5 reasons to outsource your website design

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Over the years I have worked with thousands of clients (in all different levels of business).  Some have been in business (offline) for years and some are just getting into it.  Whatever level you are at I eventually get to the same point with everyone of them when it comes to website design.  YOU NEED TO OUTSOURCE IT!

Here is my list of “Top 5 reasons to outsource your website design”.

  1. Time - is MONEY.  You get to a point where you have to ask yourself; “How long is this site going to take me (at my skill level to create”?  Lets just put it this way:  You don’t want to pay someone to build the website for you cause its going to cost $2000.00 and you don’t want to spend that money.  What if,  it takes you 4-5 months to learn and build the site yourself, when you could have paid someone to get it all done in two weeks or less?  That is 3-4 months of marketing and potential money making the site could have been doing.  My guess is you could have made back your 2 g’s much quicker having the site done by a professional.  And that brings me to my last point:  You spend 4-5 months doing the site design yourself and you end up with an “average” looking design.  Would you buy from your site?  So then you may be back to the drawing board before you even get to start marketing the site.  Again,  TIME IS MONEY!
  2. Are you a website designer or a business owner?  This one is very simple to understand.  You are a business owner.  You do not need to be wasting your time learning to program or design sites.  (this one kind of ties into the first one, but you get the point)
  3. Professionalism.  Do you have the “branding” skills needed to create a professional looking logo for your site?  Think about Coke, Pepsi, or UPS.  You can instantly think of the colors they use and what thier logo looks like.  Can you do this for your site?  Bottom line, to compete you want to get it done right.  And get it done right the first time!
  4. Branding.  I know I just talked about “branding” in the previous one, but its one all in itself if you ask me.  Do you know what colors to use?  What font styles to use?  Why does McDonalds use Red and Orange for thier colors?  Do you have the ability to make everything look consistant?  From online to offline printed material, even down to the logo that will appear on the business card.
  5. You got better things to be doing when setting up a business.  Lets face it, when setting up a business there is more to it then just designing a site.  You have to think of stuff like … joint ventures, online marketing, offline marketing, business set up (tax number, business name, and accountants … maybe even setting up a legal team) to think about (even much more then that)!  Do you really want to be learning PHP and HTML when you got all these other things to be doing?

Something I know is a fear in regards to all this is your ability to be in control of the site.  You need to make sure you are using a reputable web design firm that will teach you everything you need to know about running and maintaining the site yourself.  Before you ever sign on the dotted line, make this point clear to them!

I have had really great success with a really good Utah Web Design Firm that I can recommend to anyone who wants to make the decision to step out of the web designer role, and step into the business owner (and runner) role:   http://www.97thfloor.com/proposal.html

Find the right designer by knowing what to ask.

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Asking the right questions and getting the most out of your designer.

When selecting a designer and getting your site designed you need to make sure that you ask the right questions and also not leave anything out when getting the site designed. You don’t want to find your site done and find out you forgot to get a logo designed or something like that. You want to make sure that you get it done all at once.

The following will help you prepare yourself for a designer and also to find a designer or at least create a checklist of design elements and steps you need to follow.

Preparing for the Design

It is very important before you start the actual design to make sure you understand what you want your site to be able to do and also you need to have an idea about what you want it to look like also. I am going to cover functionality and also design/accessibility.

Functionality

Functionality refers to what you want your site to be able to do. Certain functions require certain programming elements. Some functionality is just a matter of design. Below is a general list of some of the most basic and most used functionality on a site. I have also listed some tools that will help accomplish the functionality you may be looking for.

  • Shopping Cart – Makes it so that you can sell product.
  • Email List Manager/Autoresponder – Gives you the ability to collect email addresses.
  • Blog – The ability to blog information.
  • Forum – Program used for communities. An example of a forum can be found at: http://forum.joomla.org
  • Guestbook – Give people the ability to sign your guestbook and let people know they have visited your site.
  • Content Management System (CMS) – Makes it easy to build a web site. Like a web builder program.
  • Photo Gallery – Gives you the ability to create a photo gallery.
  • Polls – The ability to create polls.
  • Site Builder/Web Builder – Makes it easy to create a site from scratch.
  • Calendar – A calendaring system to let people know of events and things that are coming up and happening.

ETC…

There are many other features available, but keep in mind that the more functionality your site has, often times the more expensive it can be to design or build. Also the more complicated it can be to manage. You can always add functionality later.

Design/Accessibility

Design is a matter of making things look good. Accessibility is a matter of making things work fluidly and making things work the best way that they can. Below are some things to consider when putting your design idea together.

  • Logo
  • Professional and Clean.
  • Create a symbol that represents your business.
  • Navigation
  • 2 Forms of Navigation.
  • Clear and easy to use.
  • Colors
  • 2 to 3 Complimentary Colors.
  • Don’t use too many different colors.
  • Make sure that you choose colors that represent feelings that you are trying to convey to your visitors.
  • Forms
  • Make sure that you understand what types of forms you may need for your site.
  • Make sure that you use forms to make emailing you easier.
  • Fonts
  • No more than 2 different fonts.
  • You are limited to the fonts you can use online.
  • Often times fancy fonts are actually graphics of words.
  • Graphics
  • Make sure your graphics represent you business well.
  • Make sure that you are legally safe using the images you are using.
  • Photos often times are best to use to create a professional feeling to your site.
  • Clipart conveys fun.
  • Keep the graphics consistent.
  • Optimize graphics so the look good but load fast.
  • Keep it simple
  • Load Time
  • Make sure site is search engines friendly.

ETC…

There are many elements involved when it comes to web design. Just make sure whether you are building yourself or having someone else build it for you that you aren’t forgetting anything. The more vocal and visual you can make your vision, the more likely the design will be more accurate as the vision is interpreted.

Hosting

Once you understand what your needs are then you need to find a host that can fulfill your needs. Sometimes it’s good to talk to your designer to get some suggestions for a host that they are familiar with. Often times it pays to research hosts though because some hosts charge $50 a month and some charge $5 a month. Sometimes you will find that the $5 a month actually offers more.

When it comes to hosting always remember that the more you know technically, the cheaper hosting becomes. It will pay off in the end to educate yourself.

Creating A Guideline For Designers

When creating a guideline for designers you need to be very clear to what you need done. With what we have discussed above, you should have a very clear vision on what your needs are for your site. Designers cannot read your mind, they need your input to create the ideas that you have for your site.

Choosing your Designer

When choosing a host you should base your decision on price but more importantly experience. You should ask to see some of the things that they have done in the past. Some type of a portfolio to see what type of designing they have done in the past.

There are many different places you can go to find a designer. Below are what I would suggest looking into.

  • Local Design Company
  • Friends
  • Local College

Sometimes you can give students internship credits for designing your site and you can often times get it done for free too.

Freelancers Online – Often times finding freelancers online can cut cost tremendously, but sometimes you run into communication problems and whatnot. Below are some sites you can go to:

You can often times cut costs but as the saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”
