How I Got 30 Phone Calls And Sold My Car In One Hour On Craigslist

**UPDATE** A few who are reading this are missing the point (so let me make it right now) and that is - If you are going to make any headway with Craigslist (or anything ie eBay, Amazon etc), you must stand out. This is true with anything marketing related opportunities with your business. You have to figure out something that is going to set you apart, and help you sell your items. I am just sharing what worked for me, nothing more!

I have given other tips in the past on how to sell products on Craigslist, and the feedback has been very positive from our readers here at 97th Floor. I have often been asked to share more of my “Craigslist selling tips”, even more specifically (and recently) I was asked about tips I have for selling a vehicle on Craigslist. Because I am not selling cars everyday, it was hard to give the examples (and case studies - ie screen shots) I knew I could share (that would help others) until I was ready to get rid of an old Nissan Maxima of mine.

This week was the week I finally was ready to get rid of the car, but I also wanted to use selling it as a teaching experience for all the readers here who have been asking for more tips. It has been a good car, and I have owned it for the last 8 years, but it was just time for it to go. I recently purchased a new car, and hate dealing with sales people at dealerships, and trade-ins when I know I can get so much more for my car selling it out-right. That is where Craigslist comes into play.

I know that Nissan Maximas are hot cars, and there are even websites dedicated to them so you might think it is going to be easy to sell my car no matter what, but what I found out was not the case at all. I did two different case studies with my Craigslist postings this week, and one sold my car in an hour, and one didn’t get me a single call. Besides, when I did a search for “1995 Maxima” in my “local” area, there came back 29 results, and there are tons more people out there selling Maximas that did not include 1995 in the title so they did not even come back as results. The point here? There is lots of competition and you need to make yourself stand out, and that is exactly what my two case studies will show you.

Those of you who may have heard of Craigslist, but are wondering how on earth you can make such an ugly site work for you, and make you money need to pay attention. These tips are not earth shattering, and may not help you sell a memory foam mattress (so easily as I sold my car) but with so many people posting on Craigslist, I can see that people clearly do not know what they are doing.

Here is the first case study (see picture below) but this is my listing, which as you can see is very boring and does not stand out. I did not receive one phone call all day, or one email the entire day with this posting:

selling on craigslist

Here is a screen shot of the second case study. I am sorry I do not have a screen shot of what it looks like compared to all the others but you can imagine by looking at my title of the actual post. I was not able to take a screen shot because I had to pull the listing off so quickly because we were getting so many calls of people wanting to buy my car. Since we sold it so quickly I had no more need to be taking the calls!

selling cars on craigslist

Do you see the difference? In order for success on Craigslist, you have to make yourself stand out. You must use “call to action words” like I did - *******TODAY ONLY****ONE DAY OFFER**** using symbols as well to make it stand out. My wording is in all caps. If there are 29 other Nissan Maximas that people are going to be potentially looking at, I need an edge to make people come to my listing.

This info right here that I am giving you is not amazing or “incredible” but it is what separates the good users from bad users on Craigslist. Those that understand the importance of standing out with all the other classified ads, and those that speak to your customers, and the kind of people who are using Craigslist. They want to feel they are getting the best deal possible. They want to see what we are “offering” them or using to “entice” them. They feel that I am going to be willing to work with them to get rid of my product, and give them the best deal. That right there is going to get them to click on your ad, and call you. That my friends - is really how I was able to get 30 phone calls, and how I was able to sell my car in one hour today!

Janet Meiners,

Thanks for the lesson. It’s the same with any site you’re selling on - eBay, Amazon, etc.

Sometimes people that we buy on emotion, not facts, especially in the beginning. Words sell.

Milan,

All in Caps = great way to be flagged for removal

Good read. =)

If you sold it within an hour, you were probably asking not enough $.

As much as eyeballs help, it’s really how reasonable the price is that determines the final sale.

Tom Hebert,

Actually , a lead with all upper case is distracting but ok, as are a few asterisks - but after more than a few asterisks such as a lead like yours - I’d be tempted to mark it as spam. Mostly because most leads like that are spam. Also, imagine what CL would look like if everyone used weird, distracting headings like yours, it make the site unreadable.

You succeed, but mostly by breaking the rules of decorum and societal courtesy.

dian,

You are absolutely right. Sometimes when I see a lot of that (what I call garbage) in an AD that already has all CAPS, it’s a turn off more than an attraction. But I guess if it worked for him that day then ok; but like you said it’s against societal courtesy. Getting lucky once is ok, but it won’t work everyday.

Nathan,

Only problem is that once this information becomes shared and widespread, you lose the advantages gained by using it!

Mat Siltala,

If you are a true marketer, then you will always find an edge.

Jason Green,

Great example of the power of a good title.

Works on eBay too.

Chuck,

Janet,

On the heels of Hillary’s statement yesterday that “words are cheap”, that sounds like an Obama endorsement.

Now, back to your regular consumer-oriented blog programming. ;-)

whoindatgarden,

If everyone followed the same principle of standing out, then they would all be in the same boat.
True one has to find a way to stand out. If someone else had a similar ad on CL on the same day as you, the results of the experiment have been different.
It comes down to whether one has passion enough to sell what they have in their own Unique way. Key being Unique.

Mat Siltala,

In this case I was unique, in a different situation i would find another way.

Webmaster Blog,

Always a wise idea to assess the competition when posting an ad for your stuff online - especially when deciding the right price to sell at.

Dar,

“Required fields are in green - please avoid ALL CAPS and unnecessary symbols.” (from posting page on craigslist)

Just a thought, you are encouraging individuals to do EXACTLY what craigslist advises against! Putting your ad title in ALL CAPS and using unnecessary symbols. This is also an excellent way to get your ad flagged…as has happened to me! I am not arguing with your success, or your logic, obviously your results proved your point, I am just saying that an ad could be flagged for doing exactly what your tip advises. Craigslist community members can be a “finicky” bunch, if someone has a hair cross ways up their hind end, your ad could end up being flagged for doing as your tips advise. Not judging, just saying.

Mat Siltala,

I have never had any of my ads get flagged, and I agree as time goes on (AS WITH ANYTHING IN MARKETING) you have to adjust. The bottom line is doing what it takes to sell your items. Those that understand this, sell their items and make money, and those that don’t will just continue to whine about the methods used and still never end up making any money themselves. Its that simple!

Matthew,

I agree, but at the same time, if everyone starts following this advice, then the sales pages are going to turn into a huge mess, full of meaningless-yet-flashy titles. Just look at !***#*#*#@eBay!*(#$**(!)@@@!!!!!!!!! auction titles. You want to stand out, and I agree, this works for now, but it will end in no good if everyone starts doing this.

Louis,

The trouble with your way is I’d just as much assume your ‘call to action’ is a scam or bound to disappoint.

Mat Siltala,

Even so, I got my car sold in one hour, and that was my point here! I guess there is a number of people in which this method does work (thus the 30 calls in an hour) no scam, just really wanting to get rid of the car and in a hurry too!

Mike,

Bill, You pathetic little man. I do what I do (marketing) BECAUSE it pisses you off. Yes I take your money no matter what you do and there’s nothing you can do about it. You see me everywhere you go and in everything you do because I OWN your sorry sad ass. Don’t you see? Why would I kill myself when I’ve won? Even when your sorry little life is over I’ll be selling funeral arangements to your family. I own you even in death! It’s really because you are weak. But it gives me great pride that it makes you so mad. Anyway calm down and go have an ice cold Coca-Cola. SEE I JUST DID IT AGAIN!!!!!!! I ROCK!

Sapan Behar,

More often than not, anything that screams “call me immediately, limited time offer” is perceived by scam by a lot of people. However, if someone is really serious about buying what you are selling, they will definitely call - they got nothing to lose by making preliminary inquiries.

art nevarez,

Thanks for the GREAT advice!

Chris,

What Matt says is absolutely true, its all about standing out and separating your add from the competition. Creating that sense of urgency also helps, “MUST SELL” or “SACRIFE DEAL” really helps grab your potential customers attention.
Thanks Chris

eComm Tips » Funding Your Online Business,

[…] This is another site that gets a ton of traffic.  There are people that sell a lot of stuff on CraigsList.org.  One of the interesting things about CraigsList is that some areas use it a lot, while other areas seem to be dead.  So see what your area is like, but chances are you can sell some stuff this way, too.  Here’s a great post from Mat Siltala about how to use CraigsList effectively: How I Got 30 Phone Calls And Sold My Car In One Hour On Craigslist. Nate,

Had made some comments here, now there gone? That sucks…

I had a Craigslist Challenge with some clients and had one sell a car for $13,500 on Craigslist. Another had 2 offers on a home, didn’t end up selling, but Craigslist can definitely be a quick money maker if you have stuff to dump.

International Shipping,

Thanks for the info I am gonna try this out. I work in a place were we have to dump a lo of old furniture and some of it is quite decent. I have tried selling on craigslist but not too many calss and any that did call were time wasters. I will really try this and come back and post results

perde,

thank you very much

you are a meathead,

I f*%king hate craigslist posts that try to be clever and put in | or * or !!!!! or all caps.
It’s 90% likely to be junkmail or spam or scammy.
People must be retarded to respond to it.

I posted up an ad for a nissan sentra, nothing fancy, just the facts and 3 good pics, I got 10 people interested in 30 minutes. I sold it the next day. Who would sell a car so hastily? We both went to the DMV and I sold it there just to make sure it was no funny business.

Dublin Removal Company,

LOL

I have an armoire I have been trying to flog on craigslist for months. I am going to try this and see what happens. Thanks for the tips. Will report back if it works

thanks
