Paid submission (links) bad?

I recently heard a pod-cast in which Matt Cutts was getting interviewed and heard him say something that caught me off guard.

Let me explain,  I consider myself a follower of Matt or a ”Cuttlet” (as so many say) so what I am about to talk about in no way is bagging on Matt, just trying to share my views on the subject.  In the interview he mentioned (biasedly-or maybe becasue Google told him to) how he “hated paid links”.   This really did throw me off because a couple of months ago I had an email conversation with the SESNY06 team from Google.  I was told how paid links and submissions like ones to the Yahoo directory carry about as much credibility as 50 “regular” links (do you have any idea what a “regular link is?) cause its a “for consideration” submission.  This is what I don’t get:  No matter what way you look at it, the $299 submission fee still is a PAID LINK or submission.

Now I understand what Matt may be talking about with hating paid links, I just don’t think its fair to generalize all paid links as “hated ones” giving the mis-conception that they will hurt you.  (they won’t)  My advice is to stay away from anything that even remotely resembles a “link farm” or directories (or regular sites that promise high page rank links) that have casino ads or porn all over them.  That is a given, and for the most part I think the conversation is about these kind of sites, as well as the ones that will list you as long as you pay no matter what (even if your site is horrible).  The ones that have “for consideration fees” are ok and will help you with your link building quest.

Think back to what mom use to say, watch out who your hanging out with and chose your friends wisely!
