So, your ready to go into business eh?
This was funny, and I have to share it. I have been helping small business owners for the last several years and have heard it all (so I thought) … and then I talked to my brother-in-law.
My brother-in-law is a great guy (so don’t get me wrong, and very smart) but he has been through all of the auto-parts store jobs in the little town he lives, and when he moves to the next one he says, “they had it out for me” or some other lame excuse about not getting along with people. (in the real world you always have people you work with that you don’t get along with-SO DEAL WITH IT! Don’t you remember the jobby job I use to have at the school district?)
Well anyway, I was talking to him (my brother-in-law) the other day and he was telling me again how he quit his job and is going back to school etc etc…we have heard it all before. There was one twist this time: He told me he was doing it because the bank was putting a squash to his business venture and would not give him a small business loan. It got even funnier when I dug more. Seems that he was applying for a 300k loan with no college education, no steady work experience … oh yea and did I mention NO BUSINESS PLAN! That is the first thing I asked him, “Did you take in a business plan with you?” …. the response I got: “business plan?” … I knew it was doomed. Oh yea, and the loan was for an escavation company (he wanted to buy back hoes etc) and he has never even been in the business. Even funnier, the bank said they would give him a $300 loan. Go get a shovel and start there, in other words…. How Funny!
If my brother-in-law reads this, I am only making a little fun of you bro! I just wanted to use this example to share with people the importance of putting a business plan together BEFORE you try to get a small business grant. Any business online or off its critical!
