Understanding “anchored text”

Question:  What is anchored text?

Anchor text is one way most all SEO’s use to help clients achieve rankings in the search engines.  It is important to help you understand what anchored text is.  Simply put when you have a keyword, or phrase that is a “hyperlink” to another website or another page of your website that is anchored text.

Why all the fuss about it?  When the search engines start crawling the web and finding sites relevant to the words that people are searching, anchored text is one of the biggest factors in helping you get rankings.  An example of anchored text to a website my brother owns:  Arizona Wedding Photographer  Rather then having a link just to his website http://www.siltalaphotography.com I have a link to his website using a major keyword phrase.  So when the search engines crawl this blog they will see that the keyword phrase “Arizona Wedding Photographer” is associated with his website and this will help him become a more relevant result when searches for this phrase are done.

Don’t anchor spam your site, blog or anything for that matter!  It can be tempting to just throw in hundreds of links to your sites, but overtime using that method will hurt you.  Google will eventually see what you are doing and you will get penalized for it, or worse blacklisted from thier engine.  If you get blacklisted it could take 1/2 a year up to a year just to get yourself re-indexed once you have complied with all the rules again.  So its not worth it.

What to take from this?  Anytime you have the opportunity to get a link from someone (or some website-that is relevant to you) make sure you try to get an anchored text link first.  Long term marketing this way can help you move up the rankings more easily.
