Viral Marketing Idea Friday - Hearing Aid Clinic

I got asked this question in the form of a comment today - if I had any viral marketing ideas for a hearing aid clinic? At first it stumped me, I have to admit. Had I finally found an industry that is to boring for viral marketing? I have not had a lot of time to think about this, but all of a sudden the first thing that popped into my head was this “The 10 Greatest Health Related Technology Advances” and research out, and find the (health related) devices over the last century that have changed peoples quality of life the most. My guess is the hearing aid would for sure be on the list, or at least it would be on my list.

The thing you must remember about viral marketing, and making good content for your site is that it does not have to be a perfect match (I know I sound like a broken record for those of you who read this blog often). I do not have to find something so “amazing” about the hearing aid itself, but rather find something closely enough related to its industry, like the example above.

Other titles to posts that I feel would do well would be, “10 Things That Make Getting Old Easier” or “The Totally Amazing Devices That Make Getting Old Not So Scary” and you can list out the health related advances that make aging easier like knee replacements, hip replacements and lasik surgery (as well as including the hearing aid) and I think what would really make the article do well is if you did some research and gave pictures and stories of the “first ones” and their inventors.

I also realize that just because you are using a hearing aid does not mean you are old (or getting old), there are many ages that use them for many different reasons. These are just ideas that are popping into my head so I wanted to share them. You could do a post about “10 Advances In Technology That Make Life Easier For Special Needs Children” and list out all the amazing new technologies that are helping kids (no matter what the situation) lives become better.

So you see, I hope this gives you some ideas as to where you can take your content, and answers the question of what can someone do for viral marketing even in a pretty boring industry. Figure out something that relates to your industry and create something around it. I know the examples above would do well if created with thought and research.

Ian Wilkins,

Is that why there are so many blogs with “10 things that…”? I just never thought of it. I totally agree that content does not have to be a perfect match. I am reminded of a viral campaign by Gotvmail that uses videos of Gary Busey expounding on entrepreneurship.

Nothing would seem so dissonant, but the combination works. I think you can go even farther with this mismatching: think Obama Girl. Nevermind the outcome, She brought sex appeal into the presidential campaign and it worked, helping “Obamania” along.

Bryan Phelps,

How about the 10 most insane car stereos with some cool pictures. I’m sure a few people have visiting hearing aid clinics because of those.

Mat Siltala,

Bryan, thats an amazing great idea to add to this list. As a person who will probably need one because of loud killer stereo systems in cars as a youth (and older) I don’t know why I didn’t thing of this angle. “10 Car Stereo Systems That Will Cause Great Need For Hearing Aids Later In Life”

Thanks for the comment and great idea addition!

sharon natanblut,

I nearly stopped breathing when I saw this post. My sister has a hearing center and I’ve been trying to persuade her that there must be a way to reach out to baby boomers and find a positive way to interest them in hearing devices. Then I read your post. My sister will never believe that I wasn’t behind it! Thank you a zillion times for your ideas. I’m going to definitely add this to my blog.
