Viral Marketing Idea Friday - Start Some Controversy!

I just could not help myself with todays “viral marketing idea” post. This is almost so unbelievable (but not) that its crazy. You will learn why (in just a minute) how there is something wrong with me, and even in the situation I was in, I could not stop thinking about how I was going to turn (what I was experiencing) into a blog post related to viral marketing.

Let me give you a little background - It was my brothers birthday yesterday and he called me up and said a few of his friends were taking him to lunch and asked if I wanted to go. Of course I did, so I told him to email me directions and it was on! This is where the fun begins to this post.

To my surprise I walk into this “fine eating establishment” called “The Heart Attack Grill” that has just about the most unhealthy food you can find on the planet - no kidding - one of the burgers is estimated to be 8000 calories. They even warn you about it. The concept is pretty clever, and you soon realize how come they are doing so well. They call it “The Heart Attack Grill” because of the menu, and give it a catchy one liner “A taste worth dying for”! The cooks are Doctors and dressed in Doctors outfits and scrubs, and the waitresses are dressed in “Naughty Nurse” outfits. This place is like Hooters on steroids. Here is a picture I took to share my experience with all, and believe me this one is probably the most tame outfits:

To me, its not even about the whole concept of “sex sells”, because when I was reading all the press, and media these guys are getting, and how the owner gets 80 emails an hour from people wanting him to franchise (all over the country) it really makes me think of what made this business go viral? CONTROVERSY!!! It all comes down to the controversy that this guy has created with two key elements, 1. The girls in skimpy nurse outfits (even though the owner calls it “PG rated sex”) and 2. The unhealthy food - (this food is way worse for you then anything on the McDonalds menu and they had a documentary done on them!) the owner has sparked up so much controversy that there is no way for him to not succeed. Look here - I am even talking about it! I just found out about this place yesterday!

I thought this was appropriate for viral marketing idea Friday, because it’s a good reminder of what can do well for business whether you are an off line business owner (selling food), or just trying to gain momentum for that new business blog you just launched. If you are not into selling sex (like myself) there are plenty of ways that you can create controversy and go viral without it, I am simply just using this as an example to get you thinking about the whole concept of viral marketing and controversy!

Because I usually give examples of link bait with my posts, the only one I could think of for this is - “10 Bathrooms I Would Never Go In” and of course list this place as one of them for … um …. obvious reasons! Yea, I’ll just end it there!

Ha, I love it! I would totally visit this place! And I love how viral their entire business model is…marketing, what marketing? They don’t need no stinking marketing! This is like the good ol’ days of keyword stuffing when you’d throw whatever dirty porn word in there that you knew would get people to your site. Sadly, now your whole post has to be dirty. ;) Real shame that…*laughs*

Mat Siltala,

morgan,

you could not have stated it better…thats the beauty of going viral - it just happens if you got something good or full of controversy!! thanks for the comment!

Adanna,

itzbig (a technology-centric job matching site) launced viral campaign (www.getyourselffired.com).

at the site, you superimpose your face on a variety of compromising images to then e-mail them to your friends (or boss). You can also peruse some humorous work stress tips. It won’t get you fired, but it is fun.

enjoy

oliver,

great stuff! 8000 calories in one burger is pretty insane but i love the concept behind heart attack grill. maybe i should create something like this here in europe ;-) thanks for article - you’ve got my mind going!

Ghennipher,

love your post! “PG rated sexâ€?/controversy is a whole lot better than some of the (yawn) stuff that passes for viral marketing lately. why even go viral if no one cares? i had a cold for a couple of days last month but it didn’t change my life. “The Heart Attack Grillâ€?, “A taste worth dying forâ€?…yeah, that kind of controversy changes lives. it’s definitely a virus worth spreading…props on the great post.

@ Morgan, what do you mean no marketing?

Maybe it’s not the old skool sort of marketing where you think of a product first and than create a marketing strategy, but the skimpy outfits and ‘our food will kill you’ are all ways by this restaurant to position itself. And last time I checked, that’s still part of marketing.

Marketing is NOT advertising!

@Daan

What I’m saying is that if you have strong viral marketing ingrained in your product, you don’t need to focus as strongly on marketing by itself. Once you’ve found a niche, and exploited it, then you don’t need to ask yourself, “How am I going to market my product to make it stand out from everything similar?” By instilling your brand with a viral nature, it’ll do the work for you, without you having to struggle and work too hard at it. :)

Hey Morgan, thanks for clearing that up! I think we’re both trying to say the same thing, but are just looking at it from different angles.

Frank Antonellis,

Mat, great post on how a business can spark some controversy with an interesting approach. Considering that I probably won’t forget about the Heart Attack Grill anytime soon after this post, I’m positive they could do well as a franchise! btw Gonna post the rest of the pics?!! jk.

Michael,

Man, I can’t believe that these places continue to exist. They have crappy food and skanky girls that don’t usually look that good. They are still in business and thriving, which means people are actually going to places like this.

Malte Landwehr,

Actually on the internet you don’t really not controversy. For most geek audiences, sex will already be enough.
No honestly, I totally agree with you about sex+controversy and this is a very good example.

They say the best business to be in retail food and the sex industry. Do both as one business and what a way to go !!
