What kind of stuff can you learn from Crazy Egg?

I have been using the heat map and tracking software from Crazy Egg for a few months now, so I wanted to share a few things that I have learned over the course of those months.

I have taken a screen shot of a portion of a site of mine to share something that I have learned with this awesome software. Hopefully you will be able to see what I am getting at, and use the software to help you get a better conversion rate. Here is a screen shot of the overlay feature because the heat map was to hard to see:

Crazy Egg stats on rocky mountain mattress

This portion of the screen shot is right under the break. The tabs show up above the break just barley so the visitor can see them. View Rocky Mountain Mattress to see the whole site if you like. This picture shows what is being clicked on (and how many times). My purpose in creating the “tabs” was to have great content on my homepage without cluttering it up. My hopes were that people would click on the tabs to learn more about certain products. The most clicked on item of this page is the “see other mattresses” link, and there are no clicks on the tabs at all!

Memory foam mattresses are the biggest selling items on the site by far, yet nobody is clicking on that tab. I wonder if I am losing customers because the memory foam mattress tab is not on the first default tab? I think because its the biggest selling item on the site I need to make sure its the first thing visitors see.

I will keep you posted and updated on what I have found out, and see if it improves my conversion rate. I love crazy egg and would recommend it to anyone who wants more information about what visitors are clicking on. It can help your sites conversion rate, and that means more money for you!

Don’t ever get stuck in a rutt of thinking your site is perfect, and does not need to be changed. There is plenty to learn from analytics programs, and this little example for you is just one of them! I would love to hear any other “case studies” that have been done using the Crazy Egg analytics software. Thoughts? Case Studies? Share please!

Christer Edwards,

Glad to hear that it’s working for you. After your previous post about CrazyEgg and me mentioning the trouble I had with the service someone from there contacted me to resolve the issue. Well, they never did put anything more to resolve it. I’m still waiting for a reply.. too bad, it looks like its very helpful.

Hiten Shah,

Christer, I just filled out your contact form. We’ve been busy developing and upgrading servers, but we want to help solve the issue you mentioned.
